Computer Science Program

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science

Photo of computer science student NIU is one of the nation's largest producers of computer scientists; approximately 150 undergraduate and 60 graduate students complete their degrees each year. NIU graduates are highly regarded for their thoroughness in training and their services are in great demand. Each year, 250 companies visit campus to recruit NIU computer science graduates.

The NIU undergraduate computer science program requires mastery of the major industrial programming languages and the concepts of information technology. The program calls for the completion of at least four programming languages and seven additional courses in computer science. The NIU curriculum offers students practical experience in software for PCs, midrange systems, and mainframe computers, and, even more importantly, provides students with the background that enables them to learn new technologies after they graduate.

The general computer science emphasis, offered at RVC, prepares students to support the growing and expanding economy by managing information technology, the backbone of a business. Students should complete RVC CIS 276, RVC CIS 277 as well as two math classes before enrolling in their first NIU computer science course. All students must begin the computer science program by completing CSCI 360 offered annually during the fall semester.
