Elementary Education ProgramBachelor of Science in Education
Teachers impact the lives of all students and have the opportunity to give back to their communities. The NIU Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in elementary education, now offered in Rockford, prepares students to teach in grades K-9 and qualifies graduates for a Type 03 Illinois Elementary Certificate. Cross-disciplinary course work and multiple field-based experiences allow students to move theory to practice. As students build knowledge in child development, educational methods, assessment and teaching technologies they have opportunities to practice their skills with diverse populations in a variety of school settings. RVC-NIU Partnership elementary education students complete the program in cohort groups. To be considered for the next cohort group, candidates must submit an application, pass the Illinois Certification Testing System (ICTS) Basic Skills Test and pass a criminal background check. In addition, students must have completed pre-elementary education course work as part of an Associates degree, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and speak with an advisor. Cohort groups only form when 30 people have been accepted to the elementary education program. Click here for pre-elementary education and RVC-NIU Partnership elementary education course checklists.
