General Studies in Liberal Arts and Sciences Program

Academic Requirements

Undergraduate students must successfully complete 120 semester hours and attain a minimum 2.00 grade point average to graduate from NIU. General Studies students must meet the following requirements:

• A minimum of 85 semester hours in courses offered or approved by NIU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with at least 30 of these hours in upper-division courses.
• A minimum of 15 semester hours of courses in each of three major categories of knowledge: the humanities; behavioral and social sciences; and life, mathematical, and physical sciences.
• At least 30 semester hours after formal admission to the program.
• No more than 25 semester hours in any one department.
